Rated 1 out of 5 by Odoyle from Rod is OK, reel is Garbage. My parents bought this for a birthday present for my son, it didn't work right out of the packaging. The reel doesn't engage most of the time, and when it did, 3 or 4 turns of the handle and it was slipping again. In order to get it warrantied, I would have to pay to ship it to them so they could look at it, and then see if it would be fixed or replaced. After seeing other reviews, I decided it wasn't worth the time and money so I bought a Zebco 33 Micro-Cast to put on the rod. It is perfect and the way it should have been from the factory.

Rated 3 out of 5 by thunderbolt from Reel is loose from factory. 3/8 wrench fixes it I spent a good 45 minutes trying to figure out why the reel would not engage. After removing the nut and handle using a 3/8 wrench, I discovered the mechanism was loose and disengaged. The 5 pointed star black piece below handle is actually a nut that engages and tightens the gears in the mechanism. Take reel apart until you see the gears. There is an orange washer with 4 tabs that must fit into the metal piece profile. Once it is lined up and in place, turn the black star until all the gears tighten. Now the mechanism engages the winding spindle. Place handle back into the shaft and tighten the nut. Now the reel should work and wind the line with the handle and release it after pressing the thumb button in the back of the reel.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Nothappy from QA Fail My 5yr old son's maiden boys only camping and fishing trip is next weekend. Opened the newly purchased US Jr this morning to get some plug casts in off the back deck before breakfast. Kid couldn't be more excited about his brand new, his only, rod/reel. Until...the reel gears aren't engaging. The reel won't engage and wind the line. Back to Dick's. What a pain in the rear.

Rated 3 out of 5 by BossBuck13 from Make sure you have a wrench handy Same issue as everyone else. When feeling in the gear wouldn't engage out of the box. You need to tighten the bolt that secures the handle. My son is 6.5 and it casts very well, however, you get what you pay for as the reel isn't very good. It's a step up from the short toddler real we have (zebco or Shakespeare...can't recall) but I only see him using this for the next 1-2 years. Mainly I bought this because the rod was the shortest I could find at my loca store. We paid $15 and I feel that's decent but definitely not $25 retail. This gets 3 stars because: Pros: Casts really good Rod length great for 5.5-8yrs old Cons: Reel didn't work out of box Real quality is not very good (ok) Conclusion: if you want an inexpensive rig for a couple of years and have a wrench handy...buy it. If you don't own a wrench or want your kids to have something for 3-5 years+ I'd suggest investing in buying a rod and reel separately and building your own rig.

Rated 1 out of 5 by MarylandNewbie from Get what you pay for; read Thunderstruck review We bought this for $19 for our 7-year old’s 1st fishing camp. Reel would not engage out of the box. Before giving up and returning to Dick’s, we Googled how to fix it and found this page. Good thing - ‘cause Thunderstruck’s instructions below saved the day. Opened reel and tightened up screws. Now it works. Thank you Thunderstruck. Our kiddo is short so we liked the length of the rod itself - but that reel should really be replaced. SHAKESPEARE PRODUCT MANAGER: We’d be willing to spend another $5 or $10 retail for a higher-quality reel.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Unhappy camper from Disappointing Had to be repaired right from the box. Line was no good and line catch wouldn't work. Drag on this reel is useless as well. Been better off making my daughter an old fashioned cane pole.
