Rated 1 out of 5 by Nothappy from QA Fail My 5yr old son's maiden boys only camping and fishing trip is next weekend. Opened the newly purchased US Jr this morning to get some plug casts in off the back deck before breakfast. Kid couldn't be more excited about his brand new, his only, rod/reel. Until...the reel gears aren't engaging. The reel won't engage and wind the line. Back to Dick's. What a pain in the rear.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Odoyle from Rod is OK, reel is Garbage. My parents bought this for a birthday present for my son, it didn't work right out of the packaging. The reel doesn't engage most of the time, and when it did, 3 or 4 turns of the handle and it was slipping again. In order to get it warrantied, I would have to pay to ship it to them so they could look at it, and then see if it would be fixed or replaced. After seeing other reviews, I decided it wasn't worth the time and money so I bought a Zebco 33 Micro-Cast to put on the rod. It is perfect and the way it should have been from the factory.

Rated 3 out of 5 by BossBuck13 from Make sure you have a wrench handy Same issue as everyone else. When feeling in the gear wouldn't engage out of the box. You need to tighten the bolt that secures the handle. My son is 6.5 and it casts very well, however, you get what you pay for as the reel isn't very good. It's a step up from the short toddler real we have (zebco or Shakespeare...can't recall) but I only see him using this for the next 1-2 years. Mainly I bought this because the rod was the shortest I could find at my loca store. We paid $15 and I feel that's decent but definitely not $25 retail. This gets 3 stars because: Pros: Casts really good Rod length great for 5.5-8yrs old Cons: Reel didn't work out of box Real quality is not very good (ok) Conclusion: if you want an inexpensive rig for a couple of years and have a wrench handy...buy it. If you don't own a wrench or want your kids to have something for 3-5 years+ I'd suggest investing in buying a rod and reel separately and building your own rig.

Rated 1 out of 5 by JonA from Can I give this a 0? Just as with other review. Reel won't engage. Had an excited 5 year old only to leave him very disappointed.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Unhappy camper from Disappointing Had to be repaired right from the box. Line was no good and line catch wouldn't work. Drag on this reel is useless as well. Been better off making my daughter an old fashioned cane pole.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Frick8u from Great pole Awesome pole. Didn't use the reel that came with it. Thats the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars. But my best friends son uses same pole with reel that cane with it and it works fine. I put a small zebco 33 with 8lb and it casts great and is a blast for my son and i even enjoy it. Lol

Rated 1 out of 5 by Jbelcher from Junk Fresh out of the package and the first cast, wouldn’t reel in. My four year old was devastated because he was so excited to get a “big” rod. I was very surprised at the poor quality but this seems to be a common problem. Makes me leery about quality of other products. Very disappointing for my child and myself.
