    Horrible reel, solid rod

The rod, like all Ugly Stick rods, seems outstanding. The reel is not. It’s advertised as saltwater. First time using it it worked fine. Brought home and properly rinsed in fresh water. Second time out the handle was all but locked up and wouldn’t turn. If you get this for saltwater use more than once you might need to put a decent reel on it.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re glad to hear you’re happy with the Ugly Stik rod, but we’re sorry to hear about the issues you experienced with the reel. We understand how frustrating it would be for the reel to become difficult to operate after only a couple of uses, especially when it was purchased for saltwater fishing.

We’d appreciate the opportunity to look into this for you. Please email us a few photos of the reel and the issue you’re experiencing. Once we receive that information, we’ll be happy to review it and determine the best way to assist.

    Solid

Great setup for occasional saltwater fishing. Hooked some fish with the original tackle that came with it and is pretty solid. Nice to just take it out and throw it on and some bait on each hook. The tackle paired with it was well thought through and a good setup. I'd upgrade the reel of your going to do more serious fishing but I just kept it and put on 25 lb nylon/fluro hybrid yo zuri brand. Just string it properly with good tension and it is great cheap saltwater line. Very tough. The reel has great line amount so I put on 175 yards easy. For mostly pier fishing and bottom fishing for me so the reel just needs to be able to pull something in and don't need a crazy drag or a lot of bearings as most catches are well within the limits of the reel. For travel I'd reccomend wrapping it in some form of bubble wrap for a suitcase or a rod case as it does have eyelet inserts that can pop out if just tossed around. I'd reccomend the setup.

    Great Rod And Reel

The Rod performs Great. if you put it together correctly and line everything up, it can perform great. I believe this is more of a powerful rod than stated. maybe even as powerful as the Ugly Stick Catfish. I do very much recommend changing out the Pre-spooled line for something like 20lbs Mono, or even 30lbs. The 50 size reel handles well, a little clunky but gets the job done. I also would prefer the bail on the reel to be a little smaller as I can sometimes hit my fingers on it while reeling. The sinkers and hooks are a bonus too. For the price I definitely recommend for all stages of fishing experience beginner or pro.
